A pleasant night out at the Ping saw some new sound experiments from familiar faces, leading off with Chris Trotter's electro-ambient explorations. Performing a new suite (that has also just emerged on bandcamp in a home-recorded version), there was a nice arc at play, from wall-rumbling low-frequency electro-pop excursions to trip-hop abstractions to the close brush with acid jazz heard here.

This home recording representation of the Toronto–based artist’s live set brings atmosphere with a captial A. Keyboards and guitars are manipulated with reckless abandon to create the experimental ambient soundscapes. At times, the record dips into danceable grooves (like the drum beat under the fuzzy noise of “Dirth” or the stuttery percussion midway through “Amble In”), but for the most part I found myself intellectually admiring the shifting and building of layers. The same melodic line appears as a motif throughout, tying together the continuous cinematic narrative. What really gets me going though, is the final track, “Everyone’s”, a mashup of quaint sounding melodies, roaring saxophone, and scrunchy dance textures. Find the album on the Iderdown website.

december 2003well, you got two choices; grab a microscope and look at a heart, in the romantic way, not a clinical way, or two; play this late at night alone. Either way you get the same answers; minute details, everything leading into itself, and passion. Feelings, moments that pulse, propel, sway yr mind. Its all the same. It builds and falls away all at once – it depends where yr listening. and the fact that we get this just in time for winter …..perfect…..

This was, as usual, a joyful night of acoustic and electronic sounds that was rendered a little bittersweet in retrospect with news of The Steady's closing. I first encountered this pair making some abstract sounds as part of a trio set at Audiopollination and knew right away I wanted them to come down to TCB. With a tasty assortment of instruments ranging from laptop and Volca to ebow and toy piano there was a nice sonic range here, everything from mellow pastoral drift to some more structured material reminiscent of Chris Trotter's usual work as iderdown.
